The current national average for regular unleaded gasoline is $3.96 per gallon. Mid-grade is $4.58, premium is $4.94, and diesel is $5.38. Prices vary significantly by state, with California typically being the most expensive and states like Texas and Oklahoma being among the cheapest.
Gas prices are influenced by crude oil costs, refining capacity, distribution logistics, federal and state taxes, and global supply and demand. Policy decisions on drilling, pipelines, and energy independence also play a significant role. During periods of restricted domestic production, prices tend to rise.
Historical data shows significant variation. Under Trump's first term (2017-2021), the national average was approximately $2.49/gallon, with a low of $1.77 in April 2020. Under Biden (2021-2025), prices averaged approximately $3.52/gallon, peaking near $5.00 in June 2022. Trump's second term (2025+) has seen prices trending downward from around $3.12.
States with the lowest gas prices typically include Texas, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. These states benefit from proximity to refineries, lower state gas taxes, and fewer regulations. Currently, Texas has among the lowest averages at around $2.75/gallon.
California consistently has the highest gas prices in the nation, currently averaging around $4.59/gallon. Hawaii, Washington, Oregon, and Nevada also tend to have above-average prices due to higher state taxes, stricter environmental regulations, and transportation costs.
